2016年3月3日（日本時間）、中外製薬から次のニュースリリースが発表されました。従来より保持していたCNPの軟骨無形成症用途特許の独占的サブライセンス契約をバイオマリンと締結したものです。(本件、発表後しばらく経過しているため、ご存じの方もいらっしゃると思います)

従前ご紹介してきたとおり、バイオマリンは、CNPアナログのvosoritideの臨床試験のフェーズ2を実施中です。
そして今年の第4四半期（10-12月）には、フェーズ3がスタートする見込みとなっています。

尚、今回の契約により、バイオマリンは、軟骨無形成症を治療対象とするCNPアナログのvosoritideを製品化する権利を獲得します。
（同社は、当薬の開発・販売を見込むうえで、既存類似特許とのサブライセンス契約が必要であったものと推察されます）
中外製薬が開発を「断念」「中断」した、といったキーワードを使い報じるメディアもありますが、本契約をもって、当薬の開発が促進されるのであれば、それは決してネガティブなことではないと考えます。

上記、事業開発部部長様のコメントに鑑み、vosoritideの早期実用化を心から願っています。
Tokyo, March 3rd 2016- The major Japanese company “Chugai- Pharmaceutical Co.” announced this news release below. According to the announcement, Chugai Pharmaceutical possess CNP patent, and entered exclusive sublicense agreement with BioMarin pharmaceutical.

As I have introduced you, BioMarin is enforcing a Phase 2 clinical trial of vosoritde that is CNP analog.
And, in 4th Q this year, it is anticipated Phase 3 trial will begin according to the company presentation at 34th Annual J.P. Morgan Healthcare Conference in San Francisco.
Furthermore, this agreement gives BioMarin the rights to commercialize vosoritide as a drug for treatment of achondroplasia.
(I guess since BioMarin is going to continue development and to begin sales, it will need to get an existing exclusive sublicense agreement)
Some media companies reported that Chugai Pharmaceutical Co. should “abandon” or “postpone” the development. But I believe it is never negative impression if the development could continue taking advantage of this contact.
“We hope that this agreement will enable prompt launch of vosoritide and meet the needs of people with achondroplasia as a new treatment where none exists.”
