臨床試験における患者とスポンサー企業の最初の関わりは、患者さんやご家族が難解なプロトコルを理解することから始まり、既に困難な状況下にいる患者さんに更なる不安や負担が生じることもあります。
そこで患者中心の臨床試験が着目されるようになりました。その目的は患者さんの負担を軽減することで、その後のPatient Experienceの質を向上することにあります。
この絵本は、世界で初めて軟骨無形成症の乳幼児を対象に薬剤が投与される臨床試験（BMN111-206）の被験者のご両親または介護者の方に、治験中のことについて、お子様に説明する際に役立てることを目的としています。
被験者の乳幼児の不安を和らげ、治験への心構えの一助となればというBioMarin Global Patient Advocacy and Engagement (GPAE)のディレクションのもと、GTAが制作協力に携わりました。現在、日本を含む世界中の治験実施施設で配布されています。
Clinical trials often serve as the interaction between a patient and a sponsor company. Nevertheless, the outcome can be cumbersome trial protocols adding the burden on patients already in a challenging situation.
One of the objects of patient-centric clinical trials is to lessen patients’ burden of participation and it makes patient experience better as convenient and pleasant as possible.
This is a children’s book we are developing to help the 1st subjects in the world for infants and toddlers in the trial (BMN111-206) to make participation less scary. The purpose of this book is to help you, as a parent or caregiver, explain to your child what to expect during the study.
Under the direction of BioMarin Global Patient Advocacy and Engagement (GPAE), GTA has supported as a co-operation to ease the anxiety of the subjects’ infants and help to prepare them for the clinical trial. Currently distributed at clinical trial sites around the world, including Japan.

BioMarinは、新薬の開発プロセスの初期段階から治験薬の後期段階の試験まで、開発プロセスの各段階に患者の視点を踏まえています。世界的な研究開発では、BioMarinは、臨床試験を支援する活動（トライアル・サポート・イニシアチブ）への意見やフィードバックを得ていくなど、多くの活動において患者支援組織と緊密に協力しています。
そのような活動の1つに、「アルバートといっしょ！」というタイトルの児童書があります。この児童書は、小児や介護者が、長期に治験実施施設に通うことや自宅で知って学んでいくことを促すために開発されました。アルバートは、臨床試験の旅（クリニカルトライアル・ジャーニー）において最年少の被験者にとって馴染みをもてる親しみやすいキャラクターとして描かれました。この度、治験実施施設の審査委員会および倫理委員会に認められ、軟骨無形成症のBMN 111-206試験に参加している両親と幼い子どもたちにこの児童書を届けることができました。

Collaborations
BioMarin is committed to including the patient perspective in each phase of the development process, from early research through to late-stage trials of its investigational products. In global Research & Development, BioMarin collaborates closely with advocacy organizations on a number of initiatives, including obtaining their input and feedback on trial support initiatives.
One such trial support initiative is a children’s book entitled, Albert Is Like Me!. The Albert book was developed to help the child and caregiver manage long clinic visits as well as study requirements at home. Albert becomes a familiar and relatable character that guides the youngest participants on their clinical trial journey. Once approved by institutional review boards and ethics committees, the book was available to be provided to parents and their young children participating in the BMN 111-206 study for achondroplasia.
