AUF has been providing fashions in sizes suitable for people with dwarfism in many countries and regions around the world. There have been very few users in Japan due to language and recognition so far. 世の中には、多様なファッションが存在します。衣服は人間にとって必要不可欠なものであり、個性を表現するものといえます。ところが、障がい者のためのファッションレーベルはごく限られたものしか存在しません。入手可能なファッションは、人間の基本的な権利とであると同時に特権ともいえるものです。
Fashion is omnipresent. Clothing is a basic human need and a way for people to express their individuality. Unfortunately, there are only a few fashion labels for people with disabilities. Ready-to-wear fashion is a privilege when it should be a right.
身体に障がいを持つ人々は、ファッションの世界ではあまりクローズアップされることはありません。身体にフィットした服や個性的な服装への想いは、障がいを持つ人々にとって潜在的なあこがれとなります。ファッションは強力な自己の表現方法となりえるため、身体にあったファッションへの入手が制限されたり、手に入れることができないことは、社会から排他的になっているといっても過言ではありません。私たちの現代社会はInclusive（排他的でなくすべてを含むこと）の重要性を強調していますが、ファッション業界ではこのような変化を生み出すのに十分なアクションを起こせていません。障がいを持つ人々は、メディアや一般の人々の間でも過小評価されることがあります。メディアも一般の人々も本来は、障がいを持つ人々に目を見張り、一体感を醸成していかなければなりません。ファッションが真にインクルーシブになるためには、私たちは協力して、心の中、政治、社会における古い考え方を打破していく必要があるでしょう。
People with physical disabilities are hardly represented in the fashion world. The desire for well-fitting and individual clothing potentially becomes a luxury for a person with disabilities. Having limited or no access ready-to-wear fashion creates an increased potential for exclusion. Fashion is a powerful tool. Our present-day society emphasizes the importance of inclusivity, but does not take enough action to create real change, especially in the fashion industry. People with disabilities are also underrepresented in the media and the public. Both have the effect of creating a juxtaposition instead of togetherness through a lack of visibility of people with disabilities. For fashion to become truly inclusive, we must work together to break down old norms, in the mind, in politics, and in society.
この問題に取り組むため、Sema Gedikは2013年にドイツ初の小人症患者のためのファッションレーベルを立ち上げました。SemaのいとこのFundaは、小人症の最も一般的な形態である軟骨無形成症の当事者であり、15年前、Fundaは自分に合った服が見つからないという悩みをSemaに打ち明けました。当時、Semaはベルリン応用科学大学(HTW)でファッションデザインを学んでいました。ファッションを通じてこの不平等を是正していくことはまさにSemaの運命ともいうべきものでした。当時、他の身体障害を持つ人々のためのファッションラベルはいくつか存在していたものの、小人症の人々のためのファッションレーベルはありませんでした。
そのため、Semaは小人症の人々のための最初のファッションレーベルであるAUF AUGENHOEHEを立ち上げ、彼女の大学の研究プロジェクトとして開始することになりました。これにより、Semaとチームは小人症の方々の身体にあった構造を作成し、プロトタイプを開発することができました。具体的には、Semaとチームが世界中の13,000人以上の小人症の方々の身体を計測することで、当事者のための最初の服のサイズチャートを作成し、開発したものです。現在、AUF AUGENHOHEは身体の寸法を測るための新しいソフトウェアである「Fit Finder」を開発しています。
To address this issue, Sema Gedik founded Germany’s first fashion label for people with dwarfism in 2013. Sema’s cousin Funda has achondroplasia, the most common form of dwarfism, and 15 years ago, Funda shared her desperation in not finding clothes that fit her. At that time, Sema was studying fashion design at the Berlin University of Applied Sciences (HTW), and Sema’s mission was clear to change this inequity. There were some fashion labels for people with other physical disabilities, but none for people with dwarfism.
That’s why Sema launched AUF AUGENHOEHE, the first fashion label for people with dwarfism. It started as a research project at her university. This enabled Sema and the team to create their initial pattern constructions and develop prototypes. Sema found out that there were no clothing size chart or template for pattern construction. Here is where Sema and the team created and developed the first clothing size chart for people with dwarfism by measuring more than 13,000 people with dwarfism all over the world. Currently, AUF AUGENHOHE is developing the “Fit Finder”, a new software for sizing.
Semaはトルコのルーツを持つドイツ生まれで、ベルリンを拠点とする32歳です(2022年時点）。AUF AUGENHOEHEのチームは、80%が小人症の人々、80%が女性、12の国籍、LGTBQIA+のメンバーで構成されています。多様性に富んだチームメンバーで構成され、ダイバーシティ・インクルージョンを推進します。
Sema is German-born with Turkish roots, she is 32 years old and based in Berlin (as of 2022). AUF AUGENHOEHE’s team is made up of 80% people with dwarfism, 80% women, of 12 nationalities and LGTBQIA+ members. Most of members come from our community of AUF AUGENHOEHE. We are a very diverse team. We stand up for diversity and inclusion.

AUF AUGENHOEHE is now on the market. The first AUF AUGENHOEHE collection was shown in 2015 during Berlin’s Fashion Week, and since 2018 they launched their online store and shipping worldwide. They have clothing for women and men as well as non-gendered options. For women, the products include cardigans, chinos, blouses and tights, and for men there are shirts, chinos and college blazers.
