Director Statement
People living with Dwarfism have always been part of the African setting. With an inborn or ascribed stigma that seldom changes, they are identified with the minority in society, but that notwithstanding, they remain part of humanity and, therefore, are entitled to fundamental rights irrespective of their socio-cultural background or educational attainment.
The greatest misconception in West Africa is that Dwarfs are punishments or curses from the gods, who are carriers of evil spirits. Though Dwarfism is a genetic condition resulting in short stature, many African people have ascribed spiritual connotations to this condition. The development of science and explosion of knowledge evidenced in the 21st century has not changed how society perceives ‘Dwarfs.’
Inspired by the life of Dorcas Ama Agyeiwaa, an intelligent university student living with Dwarfism, I set out to change this misconception by making the short film “Stand Tall.” The short film has two simple goals: To encourage people living with Dwarfism to stand up for themselves and push for their dreams despite societal barriers. Secondly, to raise awareness of Dwarfism and challenge society to remove those barriers, especially, stigma.
To this end, I used all sorts of methods and found myself inventing things along the way. I tried to give it a documentary feel but not too much, and I questioned myself constantly in this regard. That was a real challenge, and I hope an audience finds it satisfying. I am pleased to announce that through this film, Dorcas’ dream has come through. She is now pursuing a fully funded Master’s degree in Europe.
